aunties | anti art exhibition

Celebrating our aunties across cultures, this exhibit channels “big aunty energy”. Big aunty energy is a presence, a demand and statement that we are included in narratives and actions from which we – Indigenous women, racialized, queer –have historically been excluded, rewriting history from our perspectives. Big aunty energy is love, understanding, and a soft place to land. And, the aunty represents anti-colonialism. In this way, the exhibit explores the “anti” as well: centering aunties as an act of anti-colonialism, anti-racism, and anti-oppression.

The Aunties | Anti Art Exhibition is on display at Mount Royal University through August 2025. The exhibit features works from Mount Royal University students Alaskan Manywounds and Avery Follett, and the Jellybean Collective (Jaime Waucaush-Warn, Karen Pheasant-Neganigwane, Gloria Pérez-Rivera, Celeste Pang).  Read more about the collaboration at: https://auntiesantimru.com/

queer joy!

Queer Joy! Art & Accountability on Alberta University Campuses was a collaboration among Mount Royal University, MacEwan University, Norquest College, and Olds College.

Recognizing a need to build solidarity among post-secondary 2SLGBTQIA+ students, staff, and faculty, we got together to plan a multi-campus arts event focused on queer joy. Held on March 13th 2024, this event brought together more than 70 people from across our four campuses for a collective arts engagement session facilitated by social artist Melanie Schambach. The Queer Joy! digital mural contains artworks from 53 2SLGBTQIA+ participants. The overall image was co-designed by the organizing team and other contributors from across our campuses who opted in to an open call. The individual pieces that make up the image were then created by participants during the March 13th  event,
